Top 10 Android app updates this week: Adult Swim, Google

Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most frequently upgraded apps for the week. We've found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to find the ones that are actually being updated by the developers rather than selecting the apps with the most installs. As in the past, we're going to filter out minor updates for the super-popular apps that have over 10 million installs, but we'll make exceptions for apps that have had significant updates. We hope you enjoy this weekly feature and that you discover some apps that end up being useful.

YouTube TV is now live for both Rokus and Apple TVs

YouTube TV looks like a pretty sweet deal for those in supported markets. But, there are a few drawbacks. Most notable among them used to be device support, popular set-top streaming devices like Rokus and Apple TVs didn't have apps to support the service. If that was holding you back from being a YouTube TV subscriber, you should be happy to hear that Google just rolled out apps for each.

For the uninitiated, YouTube TV is Google's streaming television service that provides you with a sort of basic cable package for $35, with limited à la carte options available on top of that.

Pokémon Go developer Niantic just bought an AR backend company called Escher Reality

Pokémon Go is the poster child for augmented reality. Niantic didn't make quite as big a splash with its first AR game, Ingress, but our collective millennial Pokémon-themed childhood ensured that the company's second effort had a very different reception. Now Niantic looks to be making an investment for the future, as it's just purchased Escher Reality, a startup specializing in backend (read: multiplayer) solutions for VR.

This acquisition was a very smart move for Niantic.

Instagram adds 'Type' mode to Stories

Instagram Stories are getting a new feature today, and it's called Type mode. From the name, you might guess that it has something to do with text, and you'd be right. It's a way to add stylized text to your Story, and it doesn't require a photo or video.

Type mode will appear at the bottom of the screen next to the "Normal" mode. Just select it and you can input text and choose a font, background color, and highlights.

YouTube TV comes to the Apple TV App Store

YouTube TV is a very interesting service from Google that brings TV to smartphones, tablets, and your Chromecast. The service has slowly rolled out to various third party devices, but without a set top box to take advantage of, the more devices supported the better.

Earlier today the YouTube TV app came to some Roku devices, and now the YouTube TV Twitter account announced that the app is live for the Apple TV! It's good to see the app come to an Apple device, especially since it's such a popular multimedia device.

With additional partners and channels and new devices being supported, YouTube TV is quickly growing into a viable television service even for people who aren't invested into the Google ecosystem.

Google Assistant updated with musical alarms, TV showtime info

Google Assistant is constantly being updated with new features and improvements, making for an overall better experience. Today is no different, as Google has announced a few new features coming to the Assistant and to your Google Home.

Previously, you could set alarms on your Google Home but it would just beep. Now you can select an artist, song, or radio station to wake up to to make your mornings a little easier.

You can also now ask Assistant about TV showtimes and set alarms for certain shows you don't want to miss. Further integration into TV is important as it improves the YouTube TV experience if you are subscribed to that service (though this feature will work with any TV provider).

Lastly, you can now access the music you uploaded to Google Play Music, and Google has added Voice Match to Netflix commands so you can continue watching your shows without interrupting a different user in your home.

The updates are rolling out now so give these new features a shot!
