New, huge Billboard on Times Square gets Android-ified by Google

New York City's Times Square has a huge new billboard lighting things up and Google managed to land the inaugural advertiser spot on the billboard. The billboard runs from 45th Street to 46th Street, roughly the length of a football field, and is eight stories tall. Located above the Marriott Marquis and operated by Clear Channel, the billboard is made with a display running 24 million pixels and is the "highest resolution LED screen of its size in the world."

With advertising commencing on Monday, Google is using the space to let users upload versions of themselves as created using Google's Androidify app. You do not have to be on Times Square using the app to submit your character to be seen on the billboard. Use the app or visit Google's web tool to create your character and you can submit it. If Google happens to show you on the big screen, Google will send you an email show your character on the big screen. This special introductory message from Google is scheduled to run through Tuesday.

Once the initial Androidify campaign runs its course, Google plans to use the advertising space to promote products like the Nexus line of devices, Android Wear devices, Chrome and Maps. Google is also providing a gift to several non-profit organizations to give them some time on the billboard. The entities include Made with Code (an internal to Google non-profit); Charity Water; WWF; Khan Academy; NRDC; and Donors Choose and Give Directly.
