| Last year, we got wind of a malicious version of the Facebook Lite app that was sending user data to Chinese servers and installing other apps without user permission. People were downloading the app because it's not officially available in all countries, but today its availability is expanding greatly. Facebook Lite is now available in the US, Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand. It's available in the Play Store right here. Today's expansion is notable because since its launch in 2015, Facebook Lite has only been available to countries with slower mobile data. Even in countries with speedy mobile data, though, some folks rely on slower connections, which is why Facebook is expanding its Facebook Lite app today. "We've seen that even in some developed markets people can have lower connectivity, so we want to make sure everyone has the option to use this app if they want," Facebook said when explaining today's expansion of Facebook Lite.
As its name suggests, Facebook Lite is a lightweight version of the Facebook app. It offers many of the same features as the standard app, though, including the ability to add friends, liking photos, following people and businesses, sharing photos, and RSVPing to events. It's nice to see Facebook making Facebook Lite available in countries like the US and UK, because as Facebook says, not everyone has super-fast mobile data. Some people may just prefer the Facebook Lite app to the standard app, too, especially as the regular Facebook app continues to grow in size and features. Are you going to try Facebook Lite?
