One of the tools manufacturers can use to get updates ready for their devices is the soak test wherein the update is distributed to a small group of end users to see if they can break it or otherwise find issues. One company that does this frequently is Motorola. HTC has announced to members of their HTC Elevate private community that they will offer a similar program called "HTC Preview."
HTC indicates participants in the new program will have to sign an NDA before they can take part in any testing. They also indicate that some situations may call for the issuance of "loaner" devices instead of a user committing their own device to the test. One of the risks users will take is the fact that in they eyes of their carriers they would be using unofficial software, so they may not be able to get warranty coverage. HTC says they will cover users that find themselves in this situation.
If you own an HTC device and want to participate, you will have to sign up for the HTC Elevate community. The bad news is that HTC is currently not accepting new members. HTC does indicate they will eventually open HTC Preview up to users outside of HTC Elevate, but no firm timeline has been provided.
