The Flagship Killer Is Back – Meet The OnePlus 2

OnePlus 2 Covers

Last year OnePlus shook up the industry with their flagship killer OnePlus One.  While you can argue whether or not they lived up to that "flagship killer" motto, you have to admit that they still had an impact on the industry.  While they weren't the first company to offer compelling specs at a reasonable price, they're definitely one of the best known and they are back with their sequel, the OnePlus 2.  First let's tackle the specs:

  • 5.5″ 1080p IPs Display
  • Snapdragon 810 Processor
  • 4GB / 3GB of DDR4 RAM
  • 64GB /32GB Internal Storage
  • 13MP Camera with Laser Auto Focus
  • 5MP Front Facing Camera
  • 3300 mAh Battery
  • Fingerprint Reader
  • Dual-SIM
  • USB Type-C Port
  • OxygenOS Based on Android 5.1

Just like last year with the OnePlus One, OnePlus has packed the OnePlus 2 with some pretty impressive specs.  While they're definitely not on the bleeding edge, they're good enough to hold their own against most flagships on the market.  The fingerprint reader is a new addition this year as is the Dual-SIM support and USB Type-C port.  There are some omissions as well, however, that could have made this device even more of a "flagship killer."  A QHD display is the norm for flagships nowadays so that's a bit of a miss (although you can still argue whether its necessary on a phone) and a microSD card slot and removable battery could have helped.  Oddly, they left out an NFC chip this time around which is strange as mobile payments seem to be on the rise.

In terms of design, the OnePlus 2 features an aluminum and magnesium alloy frame, stainless steel accents, and Gorilla Glass on the front.  OnePlus also brought back the StyleSwap covers that we never really got with the One.  This time around the covers will be available Sandstone Black, Bamboo, Rosewood, Black Apricot, and Kevlar.  Hopefully manufacturing goes a little bit better this time around.

The overall design is a little bit more rectangular than the One but the bezels have definitely been brought in to create a smaller all around foot print.  The camera placement seems a little on the low side but hopefully fingers won't get in the way of any shots.  As for the home button, it is very Samsung-esque but surprisingly it's not actually a physical button.  Rather they kept it as a capacitive button which seems a bit odd.

So there you have it, the OnePlus 2.  It seems like invitations will be hard to come by but maybe, just maybe, we'll be able to secure some for a give away.
