Google Search is improving how it shows tabled data

Over the years, Google has continually improved how search results are shown with things like cards for important figures and businesses, highlights, sports data, and so on. The company is now seeking to upgrade the way it displays table data in search results, which should make it easier to find the information you're specifically looking for.

Facebook adapting its app's navigation icons to your personalized usage

It's no secret that plenty of apps/services take your usage data and personalize your experience with it, but Facebook is trying something new with that information. The company is preparing to personalize its app's navigation bar with nav bar icons depending on how much it deems you need each one.

If you go to your Facebook app right now, you'll see five icons (in this order): News Feed, Watch, Marketplace, Notifications, and Menu.

HTC U12+ update improves pressure-sensitive buttons, adds camera features

Heads up, U.S.-based HTC U12+ owners, because there's a new software update now rolling out that you're going to want to download.

The new HTC U12+ update that's now rolling out in the U.S. (it was released in Taiwan earlier this month) bumps the phone to version 1.21.617.3. Included are new camera features like auto zoom for video recording and 4K 30fps video recording without a time limit, as well as enhancements to the U12+'s pressure-sensitive buttons. The update also includes improvements to battery life and system performance as well as the June 2018 Android security patches.

This update is now rolling out over the air. If you'd rather not wait for the OTA to hit your phone, you can manually check for the 437.1MB update by going into Settings > System > About phone > Software updates > Check now on your HTC U12+.

This update sounds pretty nice for owners of HTC's flagship Android phone. Not only are their some new camera features to tinker with, but it aims to improve the HTC U12+'s pressure-sensitive buttons, which received a lot of criticism when the device launched earlier this year. And of course, improved battery life and performance are always welcome.

If you've got an HTC U12+, be sure to let us know what you think of your phone's performance and pressure-sensitive buttons after installing this update!

Google sets some ground rules for notch displays

Even before Android P was officially announced, we knew that Google was planning on including notch support for Android devices this year. And sure enough, that is indeed the case.

We've seen quite a few different Android-based smartphones with a notch design up to this point, and it stands to reason that we will more than likely see quite a few more in the future. But before things get too out of hand, Google is laying down some ground rules.

In an effort to make sure that Android apps work across a variety of different devices, especially those that are starting to toy with design a bit more, the system is designed to handle things automatically. By default, Android apps should function so that the status bar should be resized to be as tall as the notch, and app content should be display below that. Put the device in landscape mode and the notch should get blacked out so the content is letterboxed but so that the notch doesn't interfere with the content.

The interesting part of Google's discussion about notches is that it it is putting the limit on two. Only two notches on smartphones, with support for one at the top and one at the bottom. That means no notch support on the side of the display. Thankfully we haven't seen that actually happen yet.

Keep in mind these rules are for the Android manufacturers that want Google's support with the Play Store and services, which is obviously the lion's share of Android devices out there in the wild. But it's always possible we see some crazy designs with a lot of different notches from a manufacturer that doesn't have to follow those rules.

Are you happy with Google's rule for limiting notches?

How to cancel your MoviePass subscription, because now you’ll probably want to

It might be an understatement to say that MoviePass isn't doing too well these days. Many of the service's subscribers (including myself) have stuck aboard the sinking ship anyway to save a bit of cash. But now that the company is imposing new restrictions on use—as well as a 50% price increase to $15 a month—it might be time to head to those lifeboats. Since you cancel service online and there are restrictions on app access/authorization, here's a complete and detailed walkthrough on how to cancel your MoviePass subscription.

MoviePass is raising prices and limiting the movies subscribers can see

MoviePass wanted to change things up in the moviegoing experience by offering a subscription, letting customers see one movie a day every month for a low monthly fee.

The service has had a variety of different subscription models in its short time on this planet, with monthly options and yearly options to choose from. But it wasn't until the service reduced its monthly subscription fee to just $10 per month that things took off. MoviePass earned itself over 3 million subscribers after that price drop, but it still wasn't enough to actually keep the lights on for much longer.

MoviePass's struggles are well documented at this point. The service has tried to make ends meet by deploying a variety of different add-ons to its plan. That includes "peak pricing", which adds a one-time charge (in some cases, up to $4.00) when you buy a ticket to a popular movie at a popular time. (Or it could just be a new release at 10:00 AM on a week day.)

But it has been a slippery slope. Most recently MoviePass simply ran out of money and, as a result, folks over the previous weekend weren't able to buy movie tickets. And that's when a huge seismic shift happened. During the launch weekend of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, many MoviePass subscribers discovered they couldn't use their subscription service to watch the movie. And then some discovered that their theater wasn't even supported at all anymore.

The reason for the change? You should just read it from MoviePass itself, because it's pretty wild:

"As we continue to evolve the service, certain movies may not always be available in every theater on our platform. This is no different than other in-home streaming options that often don't carry the latest shows or movies that may be available on other services. For example, you can't ever find Game of Thrones on Netflix, nor is Season 4 of Schitt's Creek available there yet. Here at MoviePass, we have strived to make every movie in theaters available to you as part of your subscription, and Peak Pricing has allowed – and will continue to allow – us to do so."

And if that's not enough, MoviePass would actually like you to try and force movie theater chains to support the subscription service, thank you very much:

"Can't find the movie you want to see on the app? Go to Twitter and let the studio behind it know. Want more e-ticketing theater options in your area, so that the movies you want to see peak less? Let your theater know you want them to partner with MoviePass."

MoviePass has also confirmed that it won't be supporting the "major new releases" anymore at launch. So that means if a movie opens up in over 1,000 screens across the U.S., MoviePass won't let you buy a ticket to it using the service unless it's part of what MoviePass says is "a promotional basis". So you will probably have to wait two weeks after a movie's initial wide release to use MoviePass to see it, unless of course it's a film like Gotti or American Animals, which were released with a partnership from MoviePass Ventures.

So, all of that aside, what's next? After announcing it will be drastically limiting which movies you can see with MoviePass and drastically reducing the number of theaters that are supported, how about a price hike? That's what's happening, as MoviePass says that within the next 30 days the monthly subscription fee will go up to $14.95 per month.

For that price you will still (for now) be able to see one movie every 24 hours. But keep in mind you can't see the same movie more than once. And MoviePass says it is actively working on "additional tactics" to keep people from "abusing its service".

It's probably time to pour one out for MoviePass.

Have you ever tried MoviePass? Think you'll want to now?

The Honor Note 10 has a 6.95-inch display and a pair of rear cameras

As bezels continue to shrink, smartphone manufacturers clearly have no hesitation about shoving huge display panels in their new devices.

One such device is the Honor Note 10. This brand new handset boasts a gigantic 6.95-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080×2220. The new handset features a Kirin 970 processor under the hood with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and either 64GB of 128GB of built-in storage. It's running Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box underneath Huawei's proprietary EMUI skin.

There is no headphone jack on this handset, which may be a dealbreaker for some these days. The battery measures in at 5000mAh and there is a rear fingerprint sensor included. There are 24MP camera and 16MP cameras on the back, with a 13MP front-facing camera on the other side.

The Honor Note 10 will be available in both phantom blue and magic night black. Pricing will start at ¥2799 (about $410 USD). It doesn't look like the handset will find its way outside of China any time soon, though.

Google Clock now supports Spotify for alarms

If you use the Google Clock app for your alarm and have grown tired of the standard options to help you wake up or remember to do something, then you may be in for a treat with the app's newest addition.

Google has announced the Clock app now supports Spotify. You will need to make sure that the latest versions of both the Clock app and Spotify are installed on your device. Once you have that taken care of, just open the Clock app and you will be able to choose from Spotify's own curated morning playlists, search for a specific soundtrack, or play your own recently played music.

Google-Clock-Spotify

Now when your alarm goes off you can hear the music you chose from Spotify instead of the built-in sounds. And once you turn off the alarm, you'll have the option to continue to listen to Spotify. This new feature for the Clock app is available for both the free Spotify users and the folks who subscribe to Spotify Premium.

The feature starts rolling out globally this week. It's supported on Android 5.0 and newer devices.

Is this a feature you're going to use?

Mozilla's Indonesia-exclusive Firefox Rocket browser is now Firefox Lite

Mozilla started messing around with a pared down version of its Firefox browser specifically for Indonesia late last year. It's got the data-saving features you'd come to expect in a bare-bones mobile browser, like options to not load images or save web pages to read offline. Now, the project has a new name: Firefox Lite.

What Lite's new handle lacks in uniqueness, it makes up for in practicality. Rocket didn't really let on what the app was all about; with Lite, you know what you're getting into.
