Samsung says its newest OLED display is unbreakable

Samsung has been making OLED panels for quite some time, including plenty of flexible options. But in most instances, that means the flexible piece is hidden behind a rigid piece of "protective" glass. But Samsung wants to change things a bit, and has just announced a new OLED display that has been officially certified by Underwriters Laboratories. The new OLED panel actually includes an integrated plastic cover, which means it will boast innate flexibility but still have the properties of glass.

The ruggedness of the design has already been certified by UL. The testing included several successive drops from 4 feet (1.2 meters) and a successful drop test from 6 feet (1.8 meters). It also proved that Samsung's new OLED display "continued to function normally with no damage to its front, sides, or edges" even when it was subjected to tests in 159.8°F (71 degrees Celsius) and -25.6°F (-32 degrees Celsius) conditions.

Samsung says the display is designed for smartphones, but the company is also eyeballing mobile video game consoles, in-car displays, military devices, e-learning tablets, and other mobile devices. However, Samsung hasn't pegged a mass production date just yet, and there isn't any word on when the company plans on actually launching the new unbreakable OLED display. But at least there's something exciting to look forward to.
