tinyCam Monitor gets updated to version 8.0 with Android O support and MP4 cloud recording

If you own a home security camera, chances are you've already heard of tinyCam Monitor. It's one of the most full-featured surveillance apps on the Play Store, and pairing it with any average security camera will get you virtually all the functionality of something more professional like the Dropcam for a fraction of the price.

The developer behind tinyCam continues to work incessantly to improve the app, and has just announced an update to version 8.0 (just 6 months after 7.0 was released, actually).

BlackBerry KeyONE Delayed Until May

Customers who were excited about the BlackBerry KeyONE shipping out in April, will be disappointed to know that the phone has been delayed.

BlackBerry's CEO John Chen made the announcement during the company's fiscal Q4 2017 earnings call, saying that we should expect to see the KeyONE to land sometime in May. The phone was unveiled by BlackBerry's hardware partner, TCL at MWC 2017 in Barcelona in late February.

The phone arrives with a 4.5-inch display with 1080 x 1620 resolution plus 433 ppi and brings a full QWERTY keyboard to the table. The KeyONE bundles a Snapdragon 625 processor that works in concert with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card slot up to 256GB).

In the photo department, the new BlackBerry KeyONE boasts a 12MP main camera with f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash and an 8MP selfie snapper with f/2.2 aperture. On top of that, the device has a fingerprint scanner up in front and a pretty decent 3,505 mAh battery to sustain operations onboard.

The BlackBerry KeyONE ships out with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, the latest Android version available at this point.

No information related Canadian pricing and availability is available at this point in time. Still don't expect to see the BlackBerry KeyONE before May.

Gmail App Getting Updated with GBoard GIF Support

Good news for GBoard fans today! Google's Gmail app has just added support to GBoad's GIF keyboard.

GBoard's GIF search function has proved quite popular with users who love expressing themselves via animations. Most recently, WhatsApp and Facebook added support for the same function and now Gmail is the latest to join the club – though, unexpectedly. The mail app often feels very professional, but the fun GIF addition will certainly be appreciated by more light-hearted users.

Users can now easily search for the right GIF and simply add it to their email right from the keyboard without having to open any third-party apps. But in order to take advantage of this function you'll need to update the Gmail Android app to the latest version which is v.7.3.13.151698241. It should become available in the Google Play Store soon, but if you can't spot it yet, don't fret – just wait a day or two.

On top of the GBoard GIF function, the latest update to Google's mail app also brings a feature that allows users to send and request money instantly, just by tapping the attachment icon when composing an email. Is Gmail trying to turn into PayPal, now?

Google takes on April Fools’ Day early with Google Gnome, Ms. PAC-Maps, and Google Wind

Google always does something fun for April Fools' Day. This year the company announced an outdoor companion to your Google Home called the Google Gnome. The Gnome lives in your backyard and gives you outdoor related info as well as controlling your gardening tools through the power of magic. Watch the video Google has posted about the Gnome.

Google also announced Ms. PAC-Maps, a Ms. PAC-Man game using Google Maps. You can play it on Android, iOS, and the desktop until April 4. There is an extra button to enable the game and it works pretty well on mobile. Give it a shot!

Lastly, Google showed of Google Wind, which can control weather in the Netherlands using existing windmills to blow bad weather away. It's a cute video.

Verizon to install data collecting app on its Android phones

Verizon plans to install an app called AppFlash on its Android devices in the coming weeks. This app is a sort of search hub taken from Evie Launcher to the left of your screen, like Google Now launcher has Google Now to the side. Unfortunately, it collects a lot of data about you.

To function as an app and media discovery tool, it needs to collect data about you, including contacts, installed apps, device info, location, and more. Of course, Google records all this information too, but it's unfortunate that Verizon had to copy a Google service and do the same thing.

The data will be shared with "the Verizon family of companies," though it will be anonymized. It will also be used for advertisements both in AppFlash and outside of it.

The EFF has issued a statement that another data collection app is just another vector for attack, especially since every Android device on the Verizon network will have this app installed. The EFF has retracted much of its harsh statement after Verizon's explanations, though.

The app is currently being tested on the LG K20 V and is opt-in, but it could roll out to more Android phones from Verizon soon. At best, it's just more bloatware that will be disabled by power users and ignored by the general public. At its worst, it's a security risk and a data collection tool. We're sure most customers won't be happy about this move. Thankfully, Verizon says it can be disabled. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Android O feature spotlight: Android tells you if an app is displaying a screen overlay

Being able to run apps that draw on top of other apps is a powerful feature of Android. Apps like Twilight take advantage of that to add a filter to the display, but other apps just show a floating UI element. However, this can also be a security concern. Android O offers a handy alert when an app is showing an overlay with a link to turn it off.

Whenever you start an app with an active screen overlay, Android O generates a notification tha t tells you "[App] displaying on top." This notification is collapsed into a single line, but you can expand it for more detail.
