MapleStory M pre-registration starts today

Nexon recently pushed out MapleStory M in a couple of territories as a soft-launch title, so it seems pretty safe to assume that the official release isn't that far off. In anticipation of when that day may come, you can pre-register on both the Play Store and the official MapleStory M website starting today. Sure, if you happen to live in Canada or any of the other soft-launch regions, you can install this right now to experience some classic 2D MMO action, but the rest of us will have to settle for a few pre-registration rewards as we wait to give it a proper go.

Insider Attack Resistance

Posted by Shawn Willden, Staff Software Engineer

Our smart devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, contain a wealth of personal information that needs to be kept safe. Google is constantly trying to find new and better ways to protect that valuable information on Android devices. From partnering with external researchers to find and fix vulnerabilities, to adding new features to the Android platform, we work to make each release and new device safer than the last. This post talks about Google's strategy for making the encryption on Google Pixel 2 devices resistant to various levels of attack—from platform, to hardware, all the way to the people who create the signing keys for Pixel devices.

We encrypt all user data on Google Pixel devices and protect the encryption keys in secure hardware. The secure hardware runs highly secure firmware that is responsible for checking the user's password. If the password is entered incorrectly, the firmware refuses to decrypt the device. This firmware also limits the rate at which passwords can be checked, making it harder for attackers to use a brute force attack.

To prevent attackers from replacing our firmware with a malicious version, we apply digital signatures. There are two ways for an attacker to defeat the signature checks and install a malicious replacement for firmware: find and exploit vulnerabilities in the signature-checking process or gain access to the signing key and get their malicious version signed so the device will accept it as a legitimate update. The signature-checking software is tiny, isolated, and vetted with extreme thoroughness. Defeating it is hard. The signing keys, however, must exist somewhere, and there must be people who have access to them.

In the past, device makers have focused on safeguarding these keys by storing the keys in secure locations and severely restricting the number of people who have access to them. That's good, but it leaves those people open to attack by coercion or social engineering. That's risky for the employees personally, and we believe it creates too much risk for user data.

To mitigate these risks, Google Pixel 2 devices implement insider attack resistance in the tamper-resistant hardware security module that guards the encryption keys for user data. This helps prevent an attacker who manages to produce properly signed malicious firmware from installing it on the security module in a lost or stolen device without the user's cooperation. Specifically, it is not possible to upgrade the firmware that checks the user's password unless you present the correct user password. There is a way to "force" an upgrade, for example when a returned device is refurbished for resale, but forcing it wipes the secrets used to decrypt the user's data, effectively destroying it.

The Android security team believes that insider attack resistance is an important element of a complete strategy for protecting user data. The Google Pixel 2 demonstrated that it's possible to protect users even against the most highly-privileged insiders. We recommend that all mobile device makers do the same. For help, device makers working to implement insider attack resistance can reach out to the Android security team through their Google contact.

Essential’s potential sale is a hit to all Android enthusiasts

The Essential Phone was an incredible phone, but a flawed one. A very flawed one, especially at launch. The software was a bit buggy, the camera was not very good, and the price tag was simply too high for most people's tastes. Over time, the price tag fell, the camera was greatly improved, and the software experience was damn near perfected. Even better is that it will continue to get better.

The device offers so much to Android enthusiasts. It runs pure, stock Android and gets updates quicker than any other manufacturer. Hell, it's gotten a few security patches quicker than some of Google's own devices. It's also gotten multiple Oreo betas (as well as a final 8.1 release) and even the new Android P Developer Preview. Not to mention the Treble support for easy future-proofing and ROM support.

It offers a pure Android experience not unlike Google's old Nexus line, and that's something that's special. Most Android phones are running heavily modified software, get official updates months or even over a year late, and get security patches every 3 months, if that. Essential took a different path, a path I wish most manufacturers took. A path I know any Android fanboy appreciates. If Essential disappears, yet another company offering stock Android disappears with it. And those are rare enough.

Support was claimed at 2 years of software updates and 3 years of security updates. And the company has proven that it is serious about support too, as the camera software (and the camera app itself) have gotten constant updates and almost every security update brings something new. Whether it's customizable notch support, portrait mode, Tiny Planet support, Bluetooth 5.0 support, or scrolling sensitivity customization, Essential has proven they both strive to improve their phone and listen to their community.

Essential also offered premium materials without the ridiculous price tag. Sure, we saw Vertu phones with diamonds and 24 karat gold, but that's not what I'm talking about. The Essential Phone dropped the aluminum frame for a titanium one, which not only felt great but resisted denting during drops (and a dent would put pressure against the glass, shattering it). It dropped the glass back for a ceramic one, a material far harder (and sexier) than even Gorilla Glass.

Essential_Phone_vs_Honor_10

Essential also pioneered the notch, and it may possibly be the best use of a notch so far. It's so small, it disappears after a day of use and never gets in the way. At the same time it's an interesting feature of the device. The bezels are still thinner than most, if any, other "bezelless" display on the market.

What about other manufacturer's egregious use of labels? Company logos front and back, FCC text, and random text all over an otherwise beautiful design. Essential ditched all of that, giving us a clean front and rear. Not a single letter to be found. The company instead hid identifying info on a little tag in the SIM tray slot. This makes the device truly feel special.

Essential's first try at a phone was extremely flawed, anyone can see that. Scrolling that's not as smooth as other flagships, poor signal on T-Mobile, a still less-than-ideal camera, and few first-party accessories (where are the charging dock and high-end DAC attachments for that click connector, Essential?). But the lessons learned could have resulted in an absolutely amazing successor. One that might have sold very well. Unfortunately we may not ever see one, as the PH-2 was officially cancelled while Essential's fate is uncertain. And while many prefer other phones over the Essential Phone, any hit to competition is a hit to the entire industry. I mourn the loss of an Essential Phone 2, and maybe you should too.

Ubisoft revives an aging series with the release of Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians, but it's just another APRG auto-brawler

The Might & Magic series hasn't received a new entry since the 2014 release of Might & Magic X: Legacy on PC. Well, today that changes as Ubisoft have released a new action RPG on the Play Store called Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians. Even though this should be exciting news for all of you M&M fans out there, all it really offers is just more of the same monotonous gameplay that can be found in countless identical titles on the Play Store, such as Summoners War or Marvel Future Fight.

LG claims AT&T skipped on G7 ThinQ because of the notch and lack of OLED display

LG just announced the V35 ThinQ, an AT&T-exclusive update to the earlier LG V30. But while AT&T has the V35 ThinQ as an exclusive, the carrier also passed on the G7 ThinQ.

LG has finally spilled the beans, and it claims the reason is all in the display. The G7 ThinQ uses a traditional LCD panel (though it is a "Super Bright" display) and AT&T didn't think it was the right panel to push its DIRECTV NOW service. The notch also pushed AT&T from offering the phone. The exclusive V35 ThinQ, in contrast, uses an AMOLED display and has no notch.

It could be argued that such reasons are silly. AMOLED displays are not inherently better than LCD, though they do have some great advantages. The notch can also be argued as unobtrusive in video, especially with such tall displays like the 19.5:1 ratio display found in the G7. Not to mention AT&T offers both LCD devices and devices with notches.

AT&T denies those reasons for passing on the device, so we'll never know which side is correct. All we know is that LG definitely caused a snafu by airing out some potentially dirty laundry.

NBA releases AR app on Android along with new 360 Portals feature

Later today, the Golden State Warriors will host the Cleveland Cavaliers in game one of the NBA Finals in Oakland. It's the fourth straight year the two teams have contested the championship, and anyone who watches basketball will be eager to see if LeBron James can pull off probably his greatest achievement yet and lead his team to victory against the odds. It's also the perfect time to release a new app related to the sport, and that's exactly what the NBA has just done.

Alcatel 1X is an Android Oreo (Go edition) phone that’s coming to the U.S. next week

The Alcatel 3V isn't the only Alcatel phone that's coming soon to the U.S.

Alcatel will launch the 1X in the U.S. next week. It'll be available from Amazon for $99.99 and will be sold as a GSM unlocked device. The Alcatel 1X will then be sold by Best Buy and Walmart.com in the coming weeks.

The Alcatel 1X is an Android Oreo (Go edition) device. That means that it runs a special version of Android Oreo that's optimized for entry-level hardware. Google's apps are optimized, too, so that they take up less storage space and use less data.

Alcatel has also added some of its own software features to the 1X. These include a Social Mode that'll help you take, edit, and share photos, as well as a Social Square feature that'll let you view recently captured photos on one half of the screen and use the camera viewfinder in the other half. There's also an Instant Collage feature that'll let you put your photos into pre-set arrangements.

On the hardware side of things, the Alcatel 1X is packing a 5.3-inch 960×480 display with 18:9 aspect ratio, 16GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card slot. There's a quad-core MediaTek MT6739 processor and 1GB of RAM inside the Alcatel 1X, too, along with a 2460mAh battery.

Other notable features of the Alcatel 1X include an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, a microUSB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a rear fingerprint reader.

It's exciting to see another Android Oreo (Go edition) device coming to market. In the past, low-cost phones like the 1X may have had to sacrifice performance to reach a low price, but Android Oreo (Go edition) should help to give the Alcatel 1X respectable performance even with its entry-level specs.

What do you think of the Alcatel 1X? Does its low price and Android Oreo (Go edition) software have you thinking about picking one up?
