Lenovo Smart Display goes on sale tomorrow

One of my favorite devices from CES this year, the Lenovo Smart Display, finally goes on sale tomorrow. The Smart Display platform is something Google has been working on for some time now and Lenovo is the first to market with its take on the idea.

The most apt comparison is obviously the Amazon Echo Show, but for most Android users the Google ecosystem is more robust and already has the information on what you are interested in and what you are doing day to day.

Just like the Google Home and Google Home Mini, Google Assistant is the star of the show with Smart Display, but the addition of the screen adds a new dimension to the device with the ability to deliver visuals from Google apps like Calendar, Duo, Maps, Photos and YouTube. YouTube TV subscribers can even watch live and recorded content on their Smart Display.

Audio content is naturally still available with access to YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Google Podcasts, and Google Play Books. Third parties available at launch include Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn.

As the Smart Display is likely going to find its home in the kitchen for many users, the recipe experience that has been built-in is quite robust with step-by-step guides on thousands of different dishes.

The Smart Display also makes for a natural hub for the smart home, with the touchscreen making for a better interface at times than voice alone and, of course, the ability to bring in visuals from a Next Cam or Nest Hello Doorbell.

The Lenovo Smart Display comes in two sizes, an 8-inch model for $199.99 and a 10-inch model for $249.99.

The hardware between the two is largely the same; the main differences are the screens, the speaker and the back material. The smaller uses a 1280 x 800 display,  1.75-inch 10W speaker, and a grey rubberized back. The larger option bumps up to a 1920 x 1200 display, 2-inch 10W speaker, and a bamboo design on the back. Both feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 624, 2GB of RAM, 4GB ROM, 5MP front-facing camera, 2 x 2 dual microphone arrays, 802.11 ac WiFi, and Bluetooth BLE.

We'll be covering the Lenovo Smart Display in more depth in our review coming soon, but if you just can't wait you can hit the Lenovo link below to order one today and it should be available through a number of retailers starting tomorrow.
