1byone Bluetooth earphones review

It seems the market for Bluetooth headphones is quickly growing as the headphones themselves get lighter and more affordable. This offering from 1byone is a pretty basic one, but it's also pretty surprising.

Overview

Bluetooth version: 4.1
Supported profile: Apt-X
Battery life: 7 hours
Price: $32.99
Where to buy: 1byone, Amazon

The 1byone Bluetooth earphones are very simple: You have two earbuds connected together with a short cable. The earbuds are small and simple, with both a replaceable tip and ear hook.

The microUSB port for charging the earphones live under this cover, which is expertly hidden.

The remote has two volume buttons (which double as track skipping buttons when held) and a function button in the center. The cable is flat and somewhat grippy, but it doesn't tangle.

Build quality

The first thing I noticed about the 1byone Bluetooth earphones are how ridiculously light they are. It's almost like they don't even have batteries in them at all. They're lighter than many regular earphones, and much lighter than some other Bluetooth earphones on the market.

The overall build quality is quite good. Despite being light plastic, the earphones are quite well constructed. Even the microUSB cover is of pretty good quality. My only complaint would be how the tips are held on. They're easy to replace, and they don't fall off by themselves, but they don't feel very solid when putting them on. Thankfully, this hasn't caused problems.

Audio quality

The audio quality is surprising with these earphones. Overall, the quality is pretty good, especially at the price point. The highs aren't totally clear at high volumes, and the sound isn't perfectly balanced, but it's still not bad at all.

What's surprising is the bass. It's clear, sharp, and very strong. It isn't overpowering by any means, but it's definitely punchy and really nice. I think the good seal contributes to the bass, but it's definitely the highlight of the audio.

For the price, the audio quality is about on par with what you'd expect. These days, cheap earphones sound surprisingly good, so you won't be disappointed. With great bass, I'd even say they sound better than the price suggests. But don't expect super clear highs or mids for listening to Floyd at crazy volumes.

Comfort

Due to their incredibly light weight, these are some of the most comfortable earphones I've ever used. Notice I didn't say Bluetooth earphones…they're that comfortable.

Most in-ears tend to fall out of my ears quickly or cause discomfort, but these fit absolutely flawlessly and retain their seal even during movement. The wings play a big role in this and are a fantastic inclusion.

The box comes with three sizes of tips and wings, offering a good range in comfort. The wings can even be angled. The flat cable makes things quite comfortable, too, being more solid than thinner cables.

Battery life

The battery life of these 1byone earphones is pretty good, and the earphones hold a charge for quite a while. I was able to get a lot of listening time in across a few weeks without the battery dying.

Charging is quick and is done with a standard microUSB cable, so you won't have to be without music for long. The earphones can be fully charged in around an hour and a half.

Extras

The 1byone earphones feature a microphone that works surprisingly well. This is where many earphones fail, and 1byone included a very solid microphone that, despite living behind your mouth, picks up your voice very well even outdoors.

The box is very well-designed, and inside is a carrying case. I wasn't a fan of the case, as it's a basic drawstring bag and smells quite strongly of manufacturing.

I've occasionally had trouble connecting the earphones to my phone. They would connect without media support for some reason, but a quick reconnect always fixed it. This seems to be abnormal.

The 1byone Bluetooth earphones are a fantastic buy at a fairly low price. The comfort alone is worth it, as they're incredibly comfortable and lightweight. They also have pretty good sound quality, great bass, and good battery life. For those into exercising or just cord cutting, these are a great buy.
