With the recent release of the LG G3, many are interested in the new infrared auto focus, how it works, and how well it works. While the camera sensor itself is the same as the G2, the imaging system of the device did see some upgrades.
The infrared auto focus system essentially times how long it takes for the reflection of the laser to come back, telling the device how far the object is. Because of the fact that the laser is extremely thin and more focused, there is a small chance of multiple returns.
LG has been pushing the fact that the camera system is hybrid, which is useful for times that the laser auto focus fails. Apparently, LG compensates for multiple returns with with contrast-based AF detection, when needed. They also say that the system is very useful in low light.
