When Apple launched the latest versions of the iPhone in September, we all saw the typical crush of Apple fans clamoring for an updated device and we have seen the news about the large numbers of devices sold. None of this is surprising as we expect Apple to get a bump as part of their release cycle that counters the increases Android claims during the rest of the year when manufacturers release their latest flagship devices. True to form, Kantar Worldpanel's latest numbers for market share through September show the effect of the release. What may be surprising though is that in the U.S. market, where Apple enjoys its biggest success, Android actually gained ground while iOS lost ground.
The latest numbers show iOS declining in market share by 3.3 percentage points to 32.6 percent compared to the same period last year. At the same time, Android increased its leading, improving to 61.8% of the market which represents growth of 4.5 percentage points compared to the prior year. iOS enjoyed more success in European markets where Apple managed to pick up 1.7 percent to claim 31% of the market. Android continues to dominate though with 73.9 percent.
Kantar's analysis also shows that 87% of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ buyers were existing iPhone owners, so Apple is not making much headway in getting users on Android to switch over. The good news for Apple of course is that owners of their devices remain loyal to the brand.
According to Kantar analyst Dominic Sunnebo, both LG and Motorola have made strides in the U.S. market with their latest flagship devices, the LG G3 and the Motorola Moto X. One notable loser in the most recent period has been Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Although Windows share has always been small, it had been showing growth for several periods. That changed this period as Windows Phone fell in all markets despite the recent acquisition of Nokia.
Besides the European and U.S. markets, Kantar also collected data on China, the largest smartphone market in the world. Xiaomi grabbed a 30.3% share of the market followed by Samsung with 18.4%. Like most other markets around the globe, Android is at the top of the heap in China with 83.4 percent of the market. Kantar also noted that 16% of Chinese buyers opted for smartphones with screens of at least 5.5-inches. The larger iPhone 6+ currently sells at about 20% of total iPhone sales, so Apple should be able to continue that trend when the device hits the Chinese market.
