HTC is just now getting the HTC RE Camera on the street and the president of HTC North Asia, Jack Tong, has already announced the company has plans to release a successor in 2015. That may be the intent of HTC, but the success of the RE Camera when released in Taiwan tomorrow will have a big impact on the eventual decision as to whether to pursue the project.
According to Tong, HTC thinks 5% of the 8 million strong market for smartphones in Taiwan will purchase the RE Camera. If HTC can reach that threshold of 400,000 units sold, a number that Tong thinks is rather low, that will bode well for a successor to be brought to market in 2015.
The RE Camera is HTC's attempt to get into a market outside of the smartphone and tablet market. Although some may think HTC is aiming for action cameras like the GoPro with the RE Camera, the device really falls somewhere in between the traditional action camera platform and a smartphone. One of the main selling points for the RE Camera is the grip sensor that lets a user pick up the device and start capturing images or video without fumbling with buttons or settings.
