Huawei MediaPad X2, a 7-inch phone with battery to spare

Events are underway at Mobile World Congress 2015 with Huawei the first to kick things off on what promises to be a full day of mobile announcements.

Huawei didn't elect to start small either with the 7-inch MediaPad X2 kicking things off. Despite the "Pad" name the MediaPad X2 falls into the phablet category, although 7-inches is certainly stretching the limits of what most would consider to be a phone.

Huawei claims the slimness of the MediaPad X2 (7.28mm) and the 80% screen-to-body ratio still allow for one-handed use, but we'll want to get some hands-on time to see that for ourselves.

The showpiece for the MediaPad X2 is the laminated 7-inch IPS display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The laminated display makes for a solid viewing experience angled at up to 178 degrees, which is certainly relevant for a device this size that lends itself to watching a video with a friend.

That big screen calls for a big battery to keep you going and Huawei didn't skimp there with a 5,000 mAh battery. You can't expect Ascend Mate 2 style battery life, but Huawei claims 12 hours of streaming video or 15 hours of web surfing.

Cameras aren't a standout feature for the MediaPad X2, but a 13MP rear camera and 5 MP front facing camera should keep the average user happy with their snapshots.

The MediaPad X2 will come in two variants and interestingly they vary not only on storage, but RAM as well. The 16GB model will feature 2GB of RAM and a "moonlight silver" color whereas the 32GB model will up the stakes with 3GB of RAM in "amber gold." No word on pricing or regional availability at this time.

Is a 7-inch phablet too much or would the opportunity to cut yourself to one gadget be tempting enough to give the Huawei MediaPad X2 a shot?
