Huawei apologizes for implying photo taken with Canon DSLR was taken with its P9

In his review of the Huawei P9, our own Nick Sarafolean had positive things to say about the new flagship, even pointing out that some of the images captured by the smartphone could compare to DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Apparently Huawei feels the same way, but decided to go about things a bit differently.

As noted by Android Police, Huawei recently published an admittedly great photo — which you can see below — to its Google+ social media page. There's plenty of detail, including her hair and the lens flares, and there'd be plenty for Huawei to brag about if a smartphone captured that image. So that's what Huawei did, writing in a caption alongside the photo:

"We managed to catch a beautiful sunrise with Deliciously Ella. The #HuaweiP9's dual Leica cameras makes taking photos in low light conditions like this a pleasure. Reinvent smartphone photography and share your sunrise pictures with us. #OO"

Huawei doesn't come right out and say the photo was taken by a P9, but the insinuation is certainly there. However, the photo's EXIF data showed that the photo was actually taken by a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a a EF70-200m f/2.8L IS II UM lens. All said, that camera setup costs upwards of $4,500, which is a bit more expensive than the P9.

It didn't take Huawei long to issue a statement about the situation, apologizing for the confusion and saying that they didn't mean to mislead anyone. The image was taken during an advertisement for the P9, so it was related to the device, Huawei says. Their full statement is below.

"It has recently been highlighted that an image posted to our social channels was not shot on the Huawei P9. The photo, which was professionally taken while filming a Huawei P9 advert, was shared to inspire our community. We recognise though that we should have been clearer with the captions for this image. It was never our intention to mislead. We apologise for this and we have removed the image."

The mix-up aside, the Huawei P9 does take some pretty stunning photos and videos thanks to its dual 12-megapixel cameras on its back. Have you tried out the P9 yet?
