Smartphone pricing has been outrageous for a long time. Paying $600 and up for a smartphone is tough to swallow, and the reason people find it so easy is due to 2 year contracts subsidizing prices to $200 and lower. But the industry is slowly but surely moving away from contracts, and phone prices have to get lower.
The first step was the Moto G, which offers very nice mid range specs for only $180 off contract. Then we have devices with high end specs launching for under $600 off contract, which is an improvement already. But according to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, the new OnePlus One will be significantly under $400.
The OnePlus One is going to be the first device designed together with CyanogenMod and running the software out of the box. The CEO of the company took the time to make fun of statements like "It'll be under $500″ when the actual price is $499, and said that the OnePlus One will actually be under $400. This could mean anything, like $380 or even lower. Even so, such a price for what should be a high end smartphone is actually really nice.
We hope to see smartphone pricing plummet within the next few years, as companies like OnePlus, Motorola, and others show companies how to build amazing phones that don't cost a crazy amount of money. I think the industry is heading in that direction, and I'm excited to see how it turns out. I'm also excited to see what the OnePlus One is like, are you?
