The lucky few that have Google Fiber have it good enough as it is, and almost every tech nerd is green with envy. But Fiber is about to get significantly better with a simple update to the Fiber TV box.
This update adds Google Cast functionality to the box, turning it into a Chromecast. No longer will you have to switch inputs to a dedicated Chromecast or Google TV, because now you can stream content from your phone directly to your TV box. It's not a huge addition, but it's a really nice feature.
Unfortunately, it comes with a caveat. Hulu, WatchESPN, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, WATCH ABC, Spotify, and HBO NOW are all not supported, though HBO GO is. This is likely to do with the owners of these apps trying to restrict streaming on a cable box, which is unfortunate, but that's how it is.
So yes, just because it's a cable box, you lose some functionality over a standard Chromecast. You may not want to throw that little dongle away just yet. The feature rolls out within the next few weeks, so Google Fiber users should start seeing it soon. Fiber users, are you upset by these restrictions, or do they not affect you? Leave a comment!
