Nexus phone are about to get a lot more Googly. During an interview at the Code Conference today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared a bit on where the Nexus program was headed in the future, saying Google will start exhibiting more control over design and features of the handsets.
According to Pichai, Google will "be more opinionated about the design of the phones," and in order to keep pushing the platform and innovating, Google will "hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones." In other words, while Nexus phones have transitioned over time from pure Android to Google's vision of Android, that difference is going to be even more apparent in the future.
The manufacturing process for Nexus devices won't change, as Google will still be working with OEM partners instead of going first-party. Even if there was a change there on the horizon, we wouldn't expect to see it until at least 2017. HTC is rumored to be manufacturing this year's Nexus devices, hopefully with a little more Google influence.
