At least some of the next generation offerings from Qualcomm are here, and though we aren't yet seeing a crazy powerful flagship processor, some nice chips were announced today. The highest end chip announced was the Snapdragon 801, a slight improvement over the Snapdragon 800. It remains a 32-bit chip, but the clock speed is bumped from 2.3GHz to 2.5GHz, the GPU is 28% faster and a faster storage interface is included. This processor will be powering many of the next generation of flagships, including the Sony Xperia Z2. And we've seen that 2.5GHz number so often in leaked spec sheets, we don't doubt it'll make its way to many more.
Then there are two new 600 series Snapdragon processors. Both are 64-bit processors based on the ARM Cortex-A53 architecture, but have full backwards compatibility with 32-bit, avoiding serious problems with the devices that will use them. The Snapdragon 610 is a quad core and the Snapdragon 615 is an octa core, in the same way that the Exynos 5 was an octa core. There are two clusters of cores, each presumably running separately using a similar implementation of the big.LITTLE design.
While these aren't powerhouse processors that will make swiping between homescreens five times smoother (I know I just took a few of you down memory lane), they're a good addition to the current lineup and will benefit many mid-range and high-end devices launching in the next year. But later this year, we'll hopefully have the Snapdragon 805 to satisfy our love for power.
