LG has confirmed that it has released an over-the-air update for its Android Wear-based G Watch to fix an issue that has been reported by a few of its owners. The problem stems from corrosion that developed in the terminal pins on the back of some of the smartwatches.
The reports started popping up a couple of weeks ago and were even mentioned by a couple of Android Central forum members on our message board s. The first though was that the corrosion was an allergic reaction to the pins on the skin, but it now appears that there's an actual hardware issue.
Android Police confirmed with Google that a response from an LG support rep to a watch owner that "small number of G Watch devices" have indeed "developed discoloration and residue buildup" on those back pins was indeed correct. The LG statement added:
"While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock. The maintenance release will be rolled out automatically over-the-air to all G Watch owners. We thank G Watch users for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
Hopefully this small update will make the LG G Watch safer to wear on the wrist from now on. What do you think of this issue?
