Android M “Doze” feature could double your battery life

Android will be getting smarter about managing power with Android M. One of the main features that they were talking up this morning at Google I/O was "Doze."

What Doze will do is recognize based on the movement of your device whether it is stationary and based on that information will "exponentially back off background activity to go into a deeper sleep state." The device will still be capable of pushing through real time alarms or respond to chat requests in this state, but background updates will be slowed or stopped.

Google reported that in testing the Nexus 9 was getting double the battery life versus the same Nexus 9 running Android Lollipop.

While this feature will be welcome on smartphones, it is clear that tablets will be the biggest beneficiaries as they are often left around for hours at a time and will go days without a charge. Standby battery life has been a common complaint with Android tablets for years now and I can't wait to get this update on my SHIELD tablet.
