Xiaomi aims for the top with Mi 6 smartphone

Xiaomi came into the public eye as a result of its rapid growth in China, even attracting former Googler Hugo Barra to come on as the company's international head. Though Barra left for Facebook in January, Xiaomi isn't slowing down. Today the company announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 6, which rivals flagships from LG, Samsung, and Apple. The specs list includes:

  • 5.15-inch 1080p display
  • Snapdragon 835 processor
  • 6GB RAM
  • 64/128GB storage
  • 12-megapixel dual rear cameras with wide-angle and telephoto lenses that offer up to 2x optical zoom
  • Stereo speakers
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • 3350mAh battery
  • Water resistance

Xiaomi is aiming to compete with pricier competitors by offering similar specs at a significantly lower price. The Mi 6 will be available for 2499 RMB ($363 USD) for the 64GB version, and 2899 RMB ($421 USD) for the 128GB version. In addition to the standard model, Xiaomi is offering a ceramic version of the 128GB model for 2999 RMB ($436 USD). These prices heavily undercut competitors, but availability will likely be limited.

Xiaomi Mi 6

Xiaomi generally sells its phones directly at Chinese retailers, and the company has had minimal expansion outside of the country. For Chinese customers, the Mi 6 represents a great alternative to more mainstream flagships. It should be noted, however, that the device has ditched the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, a move that may turn away some potential customers.
