| What started with reviews of the Google Pixel 2 XL and quickly developed into a situation after the public launch soon after, Google is apparently confident in the pOLED display in its flagship smartphone. Today, Google's Mario Queiroz took to the Google Product Forums for the Pixel 2 XL to address some of the issues folks have brought up, both on the reviewer side and on the public front. Unsurprisingly, Quieroz (and Google) are confident in the Pixel 2 XL's display, and while they have the utmost confidence in the screen, the company will be sending out software updates to address some of the complaints made against it. Google recently said it was investigating reports of screen burn-in, and it looks like those investigations are starting to bear fruit, as Queiroz says they have found that their displays "are as great as we hoped they would be" but the company will be "taking steps" to address people's concerns: "Our investigation so far has given us confidence that our displays are as great as we hoped they would be, though we're also taking steps to address the concerns we've heard."
The first complaint is about color accuracy, which Google has already addressed. Specifically, Google opted to go with more natural colors and didn't venture into the more saturated hues that some Android users might be accustomed to. As a result, Google will indeed be sending out a software update to add more color options. When that arrives, it will make even more saturated color options available for owners. "On the topic of color saturation, we designed the Pixel 2 XL to take advantage of multiple facets of the innovative new pOLED technology, including QHD+ resolution with 538 pixels per inch and a wide color gamut. One of our design intents was to achieve a more natural and accurate rendition of colors. We know that some people prefer more saturated colors, so both Pixel 2 phones already include an option to boost colors by 10% for a more vivid look. And based on the recent feedback, we're adding a new mode for more saturated colors, which will be made available via a software update to both Pixel 2 phones in the next few weeks."
The more pressing concern, however, are reports of screen burn-in. Google's testing has revealed that this may not be an issue. Specifically, through the company's testing procedures, it discovered the "Pixel 2 XL display shows that its decay characteristics are similar to OLED panels used in comparable products." That means it shouldn't have any screen burn-in issues as aggressively as has been reported on already. However, Google will be issuing a software update to address those concerns, too. Google says it uses software to mitigate any such issues already, and in an effort to keep issues at bay, software updates will continue to tweak and refine the experience so that screen burn-in doesn't become an issue. Finally, really good news: Google will also offer a two-year manufacturer's warranty with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL from this point on.
