Lollipop nearly at 10 percent in Google’s May 2015 Android distribution report

Google just released its Android distribution numbers, which show which versions of its mobile OS were used to access the Google Play store during the 7-day period that ended on May 4. Lollipop nearly doubled its share from April, going from 5.4 percent to 9.7 percent in May. Specifically, Android 5.0 finished at 9.0 percent and Android 5.1 was at 0.7 percent.

Android 4.4 KitKat is the next largest dessert around, claiming a share of 39.8 percent that's a slight drop from 41.4 percent in April. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean fell from 40.7 percent in April to 39.2 percent in May, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich dropped from 5.7 percent in April to 5.3 percent in May. Finally, both Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 2.2 Froyo lost some share, but they manage to stick around to claim 5.7 percent and 0.3 percent shares, respectively.

It's not terribly surprising to see Lollipop gain so much ground in this month's report. It did appear on two of the biggest phones of 2015, the GS6 and One M9, both of which launched in April. It's still exciting to see Lollipop's growth, though, and in June we should see it rocket past a 10 percent share thanks to continued GS6 and M9 sales as well as updates to existing phones and tablets.
