Railroad crossings in the United States have seen an increase in accidents recently, and so in an attempt to combat this issue, the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) is getting a bit of help from Google Maps.
Soon, Google Maps will gain location information on both public and private highway railroad crossings across the United States. Additionally, Maps will notify drivers utilizing its navigation tool through audio and visual alerts when they are approaching one of the crossings. While the FRA believes that the increase in accidents can be partly attributed to distracted drivers, caused by increased smartphone usage while driving, the administration believes this could help in some way.
What's more, the FRA believes that drivers that are distracted by other things, or could even be unaware of a rail crossing because it's dark out, could take advantage of the alerts. Of course, someone will actually have to be using Maps to get the warnings, so the FRA is prompting other companies, including Apple, TomTom, MapQuest and others to include them as well.
