| Google's first major update to Android 8.0 Oreo is set to arrive this week alongside one of the most important updates for devices with minimal amounts of RAM on board. Today Google officially announced that it is launching Android 8.1 Oreo to the public on Wednesday, December 6. With the new software, the hamburger (cheeseburger) emoji is getting fixed as is the beer emoji. The new software will also turn on the Pixel Visual Core, which will let third-party camera app developers add HDR+ support to their apps. However, the biggest announcement from Google is tied to Android Oreo (Go edition). This new software is designed specifically for low-end devices, like those that have between 512MB and 1GB of RAM. It will include optimizations in the software which Google says means some apps run up to 15 percent faster. Android Oreo (Go edition) is also meant to reduce the space used by Google's pre-installed apps. With the new optimizations in place, they should take up to 50 percent less space on a Go-equipped phone. Google is optimizing apps like Google Assistant and Google Maps, which now rock names like Google Assistant Go, Google Maps Go, and Gmail Go. Google does make a note that Android Oreo (Go edition) users can install any app from the Play Store that they want, but the company is introducing a new, dedicated part of the digital storefront that will showcase optimized apps, which are tuned to run well on devices with entry-level specs.
