Instagram launches Stories Archive and Highlights

While Instagram wasn't the first social network to introduce Stories to the world, it has definitely doubled down on the feature, and Stories has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the service.

Instagram continues to build upon Stories, adding new elements that make it worth using. Today the social network has announced a pair of new features tied to Stories. The first is called Stories Highlights, and it's designed to make a one stop shop for showing off a variety of different stories. And the other, Stories Archive, is meant to help you hang onto the Stories you really want to save.

Highlights will be the visible change for all users that want to share more content. It will reside just underneath an Instagram user's profile bio and it will allow for users to add several different Stories into one highlight. To create a new Highlight, users just need to tap the circular "New" icon that's on the top left. Next, users will select any story they have in their Archive, select a cover for the new collection, and then give it a name. Once the new Highlight is created, anyone that visits your profile will see it as a standalone story on your profile.

Users can create as many Highlights as they want, and they can be continuously added to. One example of this from Instagram is a user can show off the start of their season playing soccer, adding new Stories to their Highlight along the way, all the way up to the end of the season so they can show off the most noteworthy moments from start to finish.

As mentioned above, Instagram is also getting a Stories Archive feature. Starting today, any Stories that expire will now be automatically stored in the user's archive for later viewing. There will be a new icon for the Archive feature on your profile which will let you access all of that content. The most recent stories will be at the bottom of the new grid layout, and the first Story from each day will show a date indicator to help users navigate.

The Archive is private, so only the user can view their own stuff while it's in there. However, users can add to new Stories from this old content as they see fit, which will make it public again.

Both the Stories Highlights and Stories Archive are rolling out now as part of the newest update to the Instagram app, which is also being released today.

Do you think you'll use these new Stories features?
