T-Mobile customers are now seeing voicemail transcripts in Google Phone app

The Google Phone app already has a dedicated visual voicemail tab that allows users to listen to and delete voicemails quickly. It's a huge improvement over the clunky voicemail dialing we used to have to endure. However, some T-Mobile users, myself included, are now seeing transcriptions there as well, making the process even easier. This capability was added to the Phone app back in November.

We received a tip from a T-Mobile user who sent a screenshot our way, at which point I realized that I also had a voicemail transcription thanks to a scam call I'd missed.

IFTTT now plays nice with TiVo and Wiser heating systems

A few weeks back we reported that TiVo support for automation service IFTTT was inbound, and enthusiasts would be able to integrate a whole new set of applets into their workflow. Well, that day has arrived, and the new applets even include limited Alexa and Google Home integration. Wiser heating systems have also received IFTTT integration.

Wiser, for the unfamiliar, is an electronic heating solution by the British company Drayton, sort of like Nest's thermostats.

Google Play services 11.9.75, which fixes Cast device Wi-Fi issues, has hit stable

Last month it was revealed that Google Cast-supported devices were causing networking issues for many. After the story garnered widespread attention, Google quickly pushed out a fix in the form of the Play services 11.9.74 beta. Affected parties were able to manually install this version or jump into the testing program to get it, and it was supposed to fix the issue. But, that was a beta release that not everyone received (since betas are opt-in).

Google Flights will use machine learning to predict flight delays

Google Flights has been around for quite some time, and like a lot of services from Google, new features keep getting added to improve the experience.

Now Google has unveiled a new effort to help get a better grasp on flight delays. First and foremost, Google Flights will use historical flight data and machine learning to try and predict delays. For Google to flag an expected delayed flight, it has to be 80 percent sure of that delay.

Google Flights will also show the reasons why flights are delayed.

In addition, Google Flights is going to start showing more information related to fees. So if you're going to buy a ticket, the service will start showing you if additional services and features like overhead baggage space, baggage fees, or the ability to select your seat will cost more, or if it's included in the advertised ticket price.

What do you think of Google Flights' new features?

Android Developer Story: Big Fish Games uses open beta testing to de-risk their game launch

Posted by Kacey Fahey, Developer Marketing, Google Play

Based in Seattle, Big Fish Games was founded in 2002. Starting as a game studio, they quickly turned into a major publisher and distributor of casual games. Leading up to the launch of their hit time management game, Cooking Craze, the team ran an open beta on Google Play.

Big Fish Games found that using open beta provided more than 10x the amount of user feedback from around the world, and also gave them access to key metrics and Android Vitals in the Play Console. The ability to monitor game performance metrics pre-launch allowed the team to focus on areas of improvement, which lead to a 21% reduction in crash rate. The larger sample size of beta testers also provided more insights on player behavior and helped achieve a +7% improvement in day 1, day 7, and day 30 retention rates.

You can also learn more pre-launch best practices and strategies to improve performance post-launch at our Google Developer Day on Monday, March 19th at GDC. Sign up to stay informed.

Spotify launches standalone app ‘Stations’ for free playlist listening

Spotify is well known for its wide variety of playlists, but now the company has launched a new, standalone app that relies solely on the curated content.

Late on Tuesday, Spotify officially launched an app called Stations, as was first reported by Variety. The app is currently an Android exclusive and, at least at the time of publication, appears to still only be available in Australia.

For those who can try Stations, it's designed around big font and individual playlists, all designed to build around your preferences without any real user interaction beyond select the playlist. It also touts the fact that users don't need to search for anything, or type into the app at all. The music options should adapt to the user's listening patterns as well.

It is a free app and doesn't require a Spotify Premium subscription to access. However, it doesn't look like users can skip songs while they're listening, even if they are a Premium subscriber.

Spotify's own description of the app indicates that this is an experiment on the company's part, so there is no telling if Stations will see a wider launch outside of Australia.

As noted by the original report, Stations appears to be incompatible with a whole host of devices, including the Pixel smartphones, so keep that in mind.

What do you think of the idea of Stations?
