LG says G6 successor is ‘on schedule’

LG has had a couple of rough years with its G smartphone line. Two years ago, the Korean manufacturer dipped its toes into modular smartphones with the G5, but faced mediocre critical reviews and a lack of interest. In 2017, the company took things back to the basics with the G6, which gained praise for its functional features but failed to offer a unique hook for prospective customers browsing the smartphone market.

In 2017, LG is reorienting itself with a rebranding of the G series and a strong new smartphone that's intended to stand up to the Samsung Galaxy S9, Google Pixel 2, and Apple iPhone. Recently, however, Korea Herald published a story stating that LG's mobile CEO had ordered a complete redesign of the G6 successor. LG has now refuted that report and says that plans are "on schedule." Here's the full statement:

Some stories have reported that LG's mobile division is delaying the release of the G7 in order to reevaluate its performance and design. This is inaccurate. Preparations for the launch of the G6's successor are on schedule. LG intends to focus on creating products that will result in meaningful results rather than launching new products on a schedule based solely on industry expectations and traditions. The release date for G7 is currently under consideration and will be announced when the time is right.LG

While the successor to the G6 may be on track, a release date is still hazy. The LG G6 launched last spring, so another spring release is possible, but LG may spend more time on this device and push the launch until early summer. Stay tuned for more updates regarding LG's next flagship.
