Earlier this month rumors surfaced about a new program Google was working on referred to as Android "Silver." A new briefing about the program has surfaced indicating Google is moving forward with Android Silver and will be retiring the Nexus line of devices to pursue Silver. The program will involve an infusion of cash that Google will spread around to wireless carriers to promote the new high-end Silver devices within carriers' stores as part of an effort by Google to assert itself within the world of Android. Google will be striving to ensure the devices adhere to a set of Google specifications and that salespeople are trained to assist customers in fully understanding what the devices are capable of doing.
Besides advertising through carriers, Google will also work with hardware partners on marketing the new devices. This will come after the manufacturers agree to produce devices for the Silver program that come loaded with an almost pure Android experience and not much else. While details are still being worked out, it appears Google will insist devices that are part of the program not include a variety of third-party bloatware or carrier specific apps, although Google may allow some limited app installs if users can remove the apps. For their part, Google appears ready to help the manufacturers and carriers push out updates much faster.
A good comparison for the new program may be the Google Play Editions offered by various manufacturers, although some are looking to the way Google has produced their Nexus devices as a pattern for Android Silver. Initially, it is anticipated LG and Motorola will be the first to sign up with their first devices being ready for the program in 2015 in the U.S. and possibly other mature, developed markets.
