A few days ago we told you that Google renamed its native SMS app from Messenger to Android Messages, to pave the way for making RCS messaging available for everyone. Google also announced it has partnered up with several Android OEMs including Motorola, Sony, HTC and Nokia which will be implementing Android Messages into their own SMS solution. But there was a notable absentee from this list: Samsung. It turns out, Samsung wants to develop its own RCS solution which will be based on technology acquired from NewNet – a Canadian RCS operator. The company plans to put its own RCS solution onto the every Galaxy phone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or above. What's more, the Korean tech giant says the solution is compatible with the GSMA's RCS requirements, so users shouldn't have a problem sending messages between Galaxy devices and non-Galaxy ones. To drive adoption, Samsung will be partnering up with a few carriers along the globe including Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom, T-Mobile and Vodafone. For the time being Samsung hasn't specified what all this means for Canada. As you can see no official Canadian partner has been announced, but this will most likely happen soon enough. That means carriers might soon start shipping Galaxy phones with Samsung's RCS solution onboard.
