Google’s effort to improve digital wellbeing extends to YouTube’s new tools

There is a lot of content to watch on YouTube, and sometimes getting dragged down a rabbit hole of one video after another is pretty easy. Now the YouTube team would like to give you some tools to monitor just how much time you're spending in the app.

The new digital wellbeing tools are an extension of what's available in Android 9.0 Pie, which Google showcased earlier this year. The new tools are rolling out today for both Android and iOS. At the top of the list is a new "Time Watched" element, which is pretty straightforward from the name. YouTube's new tools will now let you see how much content you have watched on the platform on the current day, the day before, and the previous seven days.

From there, you can have the app remind you to take a break. This means you can set a limit for how much time you watch. When you reach that limit, the new feature will have a pop-up reminding you that you've met that limit and that it might be time to take a break for the day.

Notifications can also be a pain, basically getting us to look at our phone even after we've put it down, so YouTube will try to help with that as well. With new notification options, you can make it so that the app only sends you one notification during the day. If you find yourself getting a handful of more notifications, you can actually lump them up into one and choose a specific time to have the app send it to you in a daily digest.

If that's not good enough and you just want to turn off notifications altogether, including sounds and vibration, you can do that, too. You can set a specific start time to disable notifications, like from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM, or change the time to your specific schedule.
