Motorola gives behind the scenes look at April Fools’ animation

On Tuesday, Motorola shared a new boot animation with owners of the Moto X and Moto G. Billed as an April Fools' day animation, like some of the pranks from this year, the animation was actually pretty cool and probably was not seen as a prank. Motorola has indicated they like to change up the boot animations, especially in connection with seasonal items, to deliver a more personal, engaging experience for owners of their devices. They decided to take an opportunity with this latest animation to take people behind the scenes since the animation used a technology not seen too often these days – stop-motion animation.

Animator Kirsten Lepore says the use of stop-motion was a "fun choice" for the Motorola team. By stitching together 192 pictures to create the animation, the team thinks the use of "real" materials helped give the sequence a more "human" feel.

Lepore goes on in the Motorola blog entry to explain the development of the three characters that appear in the animation. The Loch Ness Monster is described as a very happy character, going so far as to playfully stick out its tongue. Lepore knew the Loch Ness Monster would be moving a lot, so clay was used due to its flexibility.

The Alien is more mischievous and to give it some dimension, LED lights were laid in the UFO to help it light up. For the Yeti, Lepore once again turned to clay for the face so it could be more expressive. However, the fur on the body was applied by hand to really give him a realistic texture.
