Sony’s Xperia M2 Aqua looks like it’s heading to Canada after all

Xperia-M2-Aqua-05

Last month, Sony introduced us to its Xperia M2 Aqua — a water and dust-proof version of its older brethren, the Xperia M2. At the time of the announcement, Sony stated that the device would be an 'Asia exclusive' and would not be making its way to North America. However, it now looks like that's all about to change.

According to Canadian publisher, Mobile Syrup, the handset is set to launch on Videotron, one of Canada's smaller carriers, this Thursday, October 3. It's expected to be free on any of the operators 2-year contracts or $250 on a prepaid plan.

Under the hood, you'll find a 4.8-inch qHD display (540 x 960 pixels), a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, an Adreno 305 GPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel Exmor RS rear-facing camera, 8GB of expandable storage, 4G LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2,330 mAh non-removable battery.

Google quietly adds support for Sony Xperia Z3 line to Chromecast mirroring

chromecast yo

If you've got a Chromecast, are looking for a new phone and are dying for some screen mirroring love than you may just be in luck. When Google first announced Android mirroring it was a little disappointing to see the well-spec'd Sony Xperia Z2 missing from the list.

After browsing through the support page for the Android device mirroring on the Google Chromecast something caught our eye. It appears that Google has quietly added both the Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact (which just had Australian availability announced) to the list of supported devices.

We had a hands on with the new Sony line last night and loved what we saw.

Sony SmartWatch 3, SmartBand Talk for Australia

smartwatch-3

On the wearable side of things, the Sony event provided us with our first look at Sony's foray into the Android Wear market with the SmartWatch 3 and more on their own line of smartbands with the SmartBand Talk.

Getting to the good stuff we Android nutters crave, the SmartWatch 3 will be headed here some time during October and possibly November, with exact dates to be confirmed but what has been stated is the price. When it goes on sale the SmartWatch 3 will call for $299 and will initially be offered in black and lime bands, or "classic" and "sport" edition as Sony put it. These bands are totally interchangeable and extra straps including pink and white are ...

Hands-on with the rugged Cat S50

Cat Phones has announced their S50 model earlier this month. It's a rugged LTE smartphone designed specifically to be used outdoors and in challenging environments. It's waterproof, scratch-resistant, dustproof and can withstand more than just a few bumps and scrapes. We first played with the Cat S50 at IFA, but we met with them again last night to have a closer look. Watch our hands-on video.

Google keeping a close eye on All Access, YouTube’s music streaming service is “weeks” away

google_play_music_icon

Reports and rumors have been swirling about the changes Google would be making to music streaming service All Access. The company wants to raise awareness for All Access to show the real value it has over competitors. Right now, the number of subscribers is believed to be between 500,000 and a few million. This is meager when compared to the Spotify's more than ten million subscribers. Google has a massive audience in Android and is struggling to latch people onto All Access.

Songza, acquired by Google this summer, will see its recommendation technology adapted into the music streaming service. Perhaps that will pique some interest. But that seems more like just another feature than a game-changer.

It could be the price, but Google will not be doing anything in that area. Jamie Rosenberg, Google's VP of Digital Content, said the company is "focused on creating broad awareness that the service exists" rather than shedding one or two dollars. Apparently, All Access has successfully converted people using the free trial into paying subscribers.

There has been no shortage of information regarding a music streaming service from YouTube for a very long time. It has been delayed numerous times and many questioned why it will coexist with All Access. Well, it is being reported by Reuters that a subscription service with an ad-supported option from YouTube will launch "in coming weeks." It will allow users to place multiple songs into a queue.

Underwater Sony Xperia Z3 uboxing shows off its killer feature [VIDEO]

Sony Xperia Z3 underwater unboxing

Although occasionally guilty of it ourselves, we'll admit — smartphone unboxings aren't always the funnest videos to watch. But alas, they're a necessary evil, meant to give you a quick first look at what you can expect when you open up x device for yourself (and we typically mix in our first impressions to keep things interesting).

Earlier today, we saw what happens when you crack open an actual Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone, exposing all the modular internals to the outside world. Now, the folks at Carphone Warehouse are giving us a more unconventional unboxing of the Z3, taking the phone deep underwater in their latest YouTube video. Given that the Xperia Z3 has an IP68 rating for water, it has absolutely no problem being submerged in 1.5 meters of water. You have to admit, that's one killer feature.

Check out the video below and be sure to let us know what you think.

Pushbullet introduces ‘Channels,’ like a mix between Yo, IFTTT, and RSS

Pushbullet Channels GIF

Pushbullet has slowly grown into one of those Android applications we simply can't live without. Recently, we saw updates that brought the ability to reply to our phone's SMS messages straight from our computers, and even universal copy/paste. Again, we can't say enough about the application and how it's helped streamline our workflow.

In a new update rolling out for Pushbullet on the web, the service is now introducing something they're calling "Channels." It's a little hard to describe, but we'd liken it to services like Yo, IFTTT or RSS where you can essentially subscribe to notification feeds via Pushbullet's new web portal. Once subscribed, you'll receive notifications when something like a website publishes a new post, or when the channel owner wants to notify subscribers about some important update.

Pushbullet Create Channel

While RSS feeds are naturally the most obvious type of Channel, Pushbullet describes a use case scenario where small businesses, groups, or even teachers need to send something to all their subscribers at once. Sure we have email, instant messaging, SMS, or just about any number of apps that do much of this already, but the fact that it's so easy to set up and configure on an app we're already using makes it useful enough to give it a shot.

You can get started making your own Channel here , or subscribe to the Phandroid channel here to get notified of new posts, or even receive notifications when our weekly wallpaper posts go live here . You can find all available Pushbullet Channels by visiting the link down below from your web browser.

How to "hack" Tinder in under two minutes so you can browse for matches anywhere in the world

This is how you fake the GPS Location on your phone to tell Tinder you're somewhere else!

Tinder should really be spelled T - R - O - U - B - L - E because one of these days that's what this popular dating app is going to get me into! I love Tinder. I can't help it. It's not that I'm browsing for hook-ups or dating partners or anything like that. I'm in a relationship. I'm happy. I just find it really entertaining to swipe through photos of real people. Some people spend all day looking at photos of cats. Personally, I'd rather look at photos of women. To each their own. No judging. I have a few friends who do the same thing as me, so I know I'm not totally alone in this behavior.

The trouble with Tinder of course is that in order to browse Tinder, you need to put yourself on Tinder. And with Tinder showing matches based on your preferences of sex, age and distance from your location — up to a max of 100 mile radius — it's highly possible that somebody you know will see you on Tinder. Depending on your relationship status... well... like I said... that could spell TROUBLE when you get spotted by somebody who doesn't think you should be on Tinder. For that reason, I've only ever fired up Tinder when I'm traveling and am far away from home and those odds of being recognized are minimal.
