Large smartphones are great for reading, browsing the web, and watching videos, but taking a call with a massive screen slapped against your face can look and feel a bit odd. For those of you having trouble wielding gargantuan handsets, Alcatel has a solution for you.
The company has unveiled its combo idea – its 6 inch Pop Mega smartphone and an accompanying little Buddy feature phone. The Buddy connects up to the main device via a standard Bluetooth connection, and can be used for conveniently taking calls without having to fumble around with the Pop Mega. The Buddy can also control music, access contacts, and view call history stored on the primary handset. You may remember that HTC already tried something similar with its HTC Mini Bluetooth accessory.
Unfortunately the Pop Mega's display has a sub-HD resolution of just 960 x 540, which is less than desirable for such a large handset. You're likely to be able to notice individual pixels even from quite a distance. On the plus side, the handset will come with LTE connectivity, making it a reasonable budget option.
The Pop Mega will be available on Tracfone's prepaid Straight Talk next month, complete with the Buddy in the same box. The combo package is expected to retail for less than $250. Alcatel is also planning to release 4 and 5 inch Pop smartphones next month, which will start at just $150.
