TeamViewer QuickSupport adds support for some Motorola devices

TeamViewer is an invaluable tool for IT professionals and slightly tech-savy people alike. Instead of trying to explain to your tech-illiterate friend or family member how to fix a computer problem, you can just get them far enough to download the QuickSupport client and take over from there. But due to Android app restrictions, the QuickSupport Android app only works on devices with a special component added to the ROM (normal screen sharing works on all Android 5.0+ devices).

Sony intros Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact that come with Android 8.0 Oreo preloaded

IFA 2017 has already brought with it some new smartphones, and thanks to Sony, we've got some more new hardware in the pipeline.

Sony today introduced three new Xperia smartphones: the Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact, and Xperia XA1 Plus. We'll start with the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact share several specs, including a 19-megapixel rear camera. Sony is touting this camera heavily, talking up its super slow motion 960fps video capture and Predictive Capture, the latter of which automatically starts buffering images when it sense action or a smile, before you press the shutter button. The rear cameras on the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact also offer 4K video capture, SteadyShot stabilization, and more.

Also of note is that both the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact feature IP68 water and dust resistance and high-resolution audio features like Stereo Speaker S-Fore Surround Sound and Stereo Recording. Both phones also come preloaded with Android 8.0, making them some of the first non-Pixel, non-Nexus Android phones to run Oreo.

Rounding out the shared features of these two Xperia XZ1 phones is the Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, microSD slot, USB Type-C, and a 2,700mAh battery. Both phones will include a side-mounted fingerprint reader, too, except in the U.S. where that fingerprint reader will be absent.

As for the differences between the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, the XZ1 features a 5.2-inch 1920×1080 display while the XZ1 Compact has a 4.6-inch HD screen. The XZ1 also comes with more built-in storage than the XZ1 Compact (64GB vs 32GB), and the XZ1 Compact has an 18-megapixel front-facing camera with wide angle lens while the XZ1 has a 13-megapixel front camera with wide angle lens.

The unlocked Sony Xperia XZ1 will begin rolling out around the globe in September, and as noted by The Verge, it'll hit the U.S. on September 19th for $699.99 at Amazon and Best Buy. The unlocked Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact will arrive in the U.S. a bit later, hitting on October 4th for $599.99. Also of note is that the Xperia XZ1 Compact will include support for T-Mobile US VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling.

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus

Also revealed today is the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus. This handset runs Android Nougat — Sony has already confirmed that it'll be updated to Oreo — on a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 display. It's powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P20 processor that's paired with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 3,430mAh battery.

One of the highlight features of the Xperia XA1 Plus is its 23-megapixel rear camera, which boasts a 0.6-second Quick Launch and Capture feature to help you get that important shot. It's also got a 23mm wide angle lens and HDR for photos and videos. The XA1 Plus is also packing an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with its own 23mm wide angle lens and HDR for photos support.

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus will begin rolling out this fall.

Discover secrets in The House of Da Vinci, a slick puzzler out now for Android

What would you do if you were tasked with finding one of the greatest inventors and artists of the renaissance? That's the question that The House of Da Vinci poses, and it's out right now for Android if you want to try and answer. You're playing one of Da Vinci's assistants, and you need to figure out just what's happened to your master before it's too late. But how do you do that? Well by solving a series of clever, intricate, and brilliantly well designed puzzles of course. These puzzles are viewed from the first person perspective. You're manipulating a series of objects in Da Vinci's workshop, trying to get to the secrets that are hidden within. So you're poking and prodding war machines, fantastical inventions, and all manner of contraptions that are well ahead of their time. It's not just the head-scratching that's important here though. The story is rich and engaging, and you're going to want to stick with this one to the bitter end just to try and figure out what's going on. And to see the curve balls the game is going to throw at you next. One of those is a magical gauntlet. This special piece of equipment lets you see back in time. Not only is that going to be really helpful in figuring out where Leonardo has got to, but you're going to utilise its powers to solve some of the puzzles too. The game has been out on iOS for about a month, and in that time it's received a five star rating on the App Store. That's not something to be sniffed at. So if you fancy a smart and engaging premium puzzler that's going to suck you in and not let you go, you could do a lot worse than heading to the Google Play Store and grabbing The House of Da Vinci right this second.

Andy Rubin apologizes for Essential email goof, offers affected customers LifeLock and a free phone

Once thought to be a phishing scam, the email from Essential asking people to verify their identity after a phone purchase was actually legit. Unfortunately, the BCC option was not used so any replies would go out to the 70 people who were initially emailed. Personal information like drivers licenses were sent out to strangers, which puts those people at risk of identity theft.

Andy Rubin has since put up a blog post apologizing for the ordeal, saying that the issue has been fixed and won't happen again. He has also offered affected customers a year of LifeLock to protect from identity theft.

On Twitter, Rubin also says that those affected will be getting an Essential Phone for free. Hopefully this will make up the trouble to those people, as getting a free $700 phone is a pretty decent deal.

Despite the numerous setbacks, the company is soldiering on. How many of you are waiting for your devices now? Leave a comment!

Sony announces Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade roadmap

Now that Android 8.0 Oreo has been announced, everyone is wondering when they will get the update. Sony has announced the Xperia devices that will get an Oreo upgrade in the future.

The Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia Touch and Xperia XA1 Plus. The Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will both launch with Oreo on board.

Unfortunately, there are no timelines given for these Android 8.0 updates. We have no idea when devices will start receiving the OTA, but if it's anything like HTC's plans, we hope that at least a few devices will get the Oreo update this year.

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges will have you fighting lightsaber duels from your living room

Either as part of the ongoing IFA festivities or in prep for Force Friday II, Lenovo has just announced a product together with Disney. Called Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, it's an augmented reality Star Wars game that will have you flapping about a lightsaber replica as you fight villains like Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Let's hope there's a wrist strap.

It is a tiny bit confusing, as Lenovo and Disney aren't making much of a distinction between the game and the hardware included.

Google Gboard now supports stickers and Bitmoji

Texting is still the dominant means of communication for most people, and substituting actual words with emoji, stickers, and the like has become extremely popular. So it's not surprise to hear that Google has upgraded Gboard to support not only stickers, but also Bitmoji.

To get these new features, you'll need to update the Gboard app and then you'll be able to download sticker packs from the Play Store. There's a separate Bitmoji app you'll need to download if you want those characters. Once that's done you'll need to tap the emoji button on the Gboard, then select the Bitmoji button or sticker button.

As far as sticker options go right now, Pixar, Disney, the NBA, Hello Kitty, and many other properties are covered. More will be coming down the pipe in the near future, too, if those don't suit your needs.

As for the update to Gboard, Google says it is beginning to roll out now, so it should arrive soon.

Do you use the Gboard app as your standard keyboard?

Moto X4 now official with Amazon Alexa

The Lenovo-owned Motorola has officially announced a brand new smartphone, unveiling a new model in the long-running X series.

The Moto X4 is a mid-range handset that boasts Corning Gorilla Glass on both the front and back. The frame is anodized aluminum, and the handset is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance. Under the hood there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in storage. There's also a microSD card slot for expandable storage, too.

The 5.2-inch display has a 1080p HD resolution, and there's a 16-megapixel front-facing camera above it. Around back, there's a 12-megapixel standard shooter and an 8-megapixel wide angle lens next to it. Together they'll give your photos the blurry, bokeh effect if you want. The cameras also support a new Landmark Detection feature that will let you point the camera at a point of interest and, if there's any additional information to learn about it, the phone will show it to the user.

The Moto X4 is running Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, and one of the major bullet points for the handset's features list is the built-in integration with Amazon Alexa. That means you'll be able to use the digital personal assistant without unlocking the handset.

There's a fingerprint sensor below the Moto X4′s display, NFC support, a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a battery that measures in at 3000mAh.

As far as availability goes, Motorola says the Moto X4 will launch in Europe in September for €399 ($475 USD). A launch in the United States is planned for sometime in the fall, but there's no specific date or pricing to announce just yet.

What do you think of the Moto X4?

Super Meat Boy Forever coming to everything in 2018, including Android

Big news folks, the sequel to Super Meat Boy is coming to Android in 2018, along with just about every other platform out there. It is titled Super Meat Boy Forever, and apparently the highly challenging platforming action that is synonymous with its name is being switched out for auto-runner gameplay.

Now before everyone gets their pitchforks out, I'd like to point out that Team Meat is still in charge of the franchise and Edmund McMillen is very much a part of Super Meat Boy Forever's development.
