Fitbit announces Ionic smartwatch and Flyer headphones

It's been known for some time that Fitbit was working hard on a smartwatch, and while delays had reportedly dragged out the launch, the time for waiting is now over.

Today Fitbit officially announced the Ionic smartwatch, a wearable that's priced at $299 and is available for pre-order today. The design is decidedly Fitbit, with a square display and plenty of room for bezels. The Ionic also supports interchangeable bands, with the company offering Sport, Leather, and Classic options. There's built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 as well.

The Ionic boasts 2.5GB of built-in storage. There's a heart rate sensor on board and a new SpO2 sensor which can be used to estimate the blood oxygen levels. That means the Ionic can help measure sleep apnea metrics. The wearable also supports Fitbit Pay, so owners can make payments right from the Ionic, and mirroring notifications from Android and iOS.

Other features of the Fitbit Ionic include support for custom watch faces, Automatic Run Detect, Fitbit Coach, and automatic sleep tracking. Perhaps the most important feature is the battery life, which Fitbit says will last "4+" days on a single charge. If you use GPS and/or listen to music, though, that battery life can be expected to drop to just 10 hours.

As mentioned above, the Ionic is available to pre-order now. It'll go on sale in a variety of retail shops beginning in October of this year.

Fitbit today also unveiled the Flyer headphones. As one might imagine, the Flyer headphones are focused on fitness. They're equipped with Bluetooth, and Fitbit says they are sweat-proof and water resistant. Fitbit says the Flyers will last about six hours on a single charge, and with a 15-minute charge, the headphones can get about an extra hour of working battery life.

The Flyers charge with a micro-USB port and they can be connected to two devices at the same time. They are priced at $129.95 and they'll be available in gold/gray and black/blue. They go on sale in October.

So, who's making the Fitbit Ionic and Flyer headphones their newest devices?
