Prototype RED Hydrogen One handled on camera

RED, a company that's best known for high-quality camera equipment, recently announced that it's going to launch a modular smartphone called the Hydrogen One. A few features of the device were revealed, like its 5.7-inch display that uses nanotechnology to "seamlessly [switch] between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games." However, many details were left in the dark, including any clear pictures of the Hydrogen One.

Now we've got a prototype of the RED Hydrogen One getting handled on camera. Marques Brownlee, MKBHD on YouTube, managed to get his hands on a prototype of the handset and went to work showing it off.

The Hydrogen One features grips on the sides, a metal panel on the back, and kevlar panels above and below that metal piece. There's a dual camera setup on the back of the phone, front-facing speakers on the other side, and a USB-C port on the bottom of the phone. There's also a bottom-facing 3.5mm headphone jack, if you're curious.

Unfortunately, we don't get to see the display in its nanotechnology-powered greatness, but watching Brownlee's reaction to it — even if it does have some light bleed — is worthwhile. He also shows off a camera lens module attached to the back of the phone.

It's certainly a video worth checking out, if anything just to see a prototype of a $1,195 smartphone. RED is also offering a titanium model for $1,595. Both Hydrogen One phones should begin shipping in the first quarter of next year, but no exact release date has been announced just yet.

What do you think of the RED Hydrogen One? Worth the cash?
