Levi’s Commuter Trucker smart jacket goes on sale September 27

Getting as many things connected as possible is the ultimate sci-fi dream, which means even clothes have to get tossed into the bandwagon, too. Google and Levi's look to start things off with a new jacket that uses Jacquard technology.

The Levi's Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard was actually first introduced back in March of this year. The Jacquard technology was put together from Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP), and it's designed specifically for a "connected apparel platform."

Google notes that the Commuter Trucker Jacket can be washed as long as you remove the "snap tag," and that it's a durable jacket that's designed to be comfortable to wear. However, its one big selling point is the technology built into it, which allows owners to stop and play music, be alerted to incoming calls and texts, and more with just a swipe or tap on the jacket's sleeve.

There's a Jacquard app you'll need to install on your phone which will let you customize the swipes and taps that the Jacquard technology will interpret when you're wearing the jacket. Here are some of the things you can do with the Jacquard technology:

  • Play or pause your music, skip to the next track, or ask what song is playing.
  • Get your next direction, ETA, or the current time.
  • Receive updates on incoming call or texts with a subtle LED light and a vibration on your sleeve, and have the text message read to you.

The Levi's Commuter Trucker smart jacket with Jacquard technology will go on sale beginning Wednesday, September 27, and it will retail for $350. It works with both Android devices (running Android 6.0 or newer) and iOS devices running iOS 10 or newer).

What do you think of Levi's and Google ATAP's creation? Will you jump on board with a smart jacket?
