Instagram is rolling out its ‘Data Download’ tool

Facebook is not in the best spot when it comes to perceptions on how a company handles user data, and as such, the social networking giant has tried to make some changes that might appease angered users.

One of those changes is an ability to download data tied to an app, which Facebook launched for its social network not long ago. Now the Facebook-owned Instagram is rolling out its own similar feature. The "Data Download" tool will let users download their content, making it possible to see what Instagram has access to and take that content to other networks if the user wishes. The tool is available on the web through this link and will be available through the Android and iOS apps soon.

With the Data Download tool, Instagram users will be able to download their photos, videos, archived Stories, non-ephemeral messages, profile, and information. Depending on how often you use Instagram and how often you've published content, it might take quite a long while to download all of it.

This move from Facebook and Instagram is in line with the GDPR privacy law that is going into effect on May 25 in the European Union. But making it available to all users is an important step in the right direction.

Do you plan on downloading your Instagram data?
