Phones are getting more expensive, but luckily there are plenty of options out there if you don't feel like forking over a grand to get a new daily driver. If you don't mind spending a lot of cash, though, there's a new Cat-branded device to consider. The Cat S61 is now officially official. This is a rugged handset which boasts a 5.2-inch 1080p HD Gorilla Glass 5 display with wet and gloved finger technology. Under the hood there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage. There is a microSD card slot if you need to expand that storage.
Around back there is a 16MP camera with phase detection autofocus, and around front there is an 8MP camera. The battery measures in at 4500mAh and there's QuickCharge 4.0 support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and Bluetooth 5. Cat also made sure the S61 is running Android Oreo out of the box, and it will be upgradeable to Android P whenever that update is ready for the public. Now, for the interesting bits. The Cat S61 also features an integrated FLIR thermal imaging camera, which in itself boasts an expanded temperature range of 400 degrees Celsius. Cat includes a MyFLIR app on the phone out of the box that provides support for live streaming thermal imaging content. There is also a distance measuring tool with the phone that can measure distances up to 10 meters and an indoor air quality sensor for good measure.
As for the rugged design, it is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance and also meets the MIL-SPEC 810G specification to handle drops, vibration, sand, salt mist (!), pressure, and thermal shock. The frame of the Cat S61 is a reinforced aluminum die-cast offering. The Cat S61 is priced at $999 / €899 / £799 and it will arrive sometime in the second quarter of this year. So, there's the Cat S61. What do you think of the newest rugged phone on the block? Android Match
