Hugo Barra joining Facebook as VP of VR

After spending time at Google and Xiaomi, the next landing spot for Hugo Barra has been revealed.

Hugo Barra will join Facebook as the company's Vice President of Virtual Reality. The news was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who said that Barra would lead all of Facebook's VR efforts, including Oculus.

Here's Zuckerberg's full statement on the Barra news:

"I'm excited that Hugo Barra is joining Facebook to lead all of our virtual reality efforts, including our Oculus team. Hugo's in China right now, so here we are together in VR. It seems fitting.

"I've known Hugo for a long time, starting when he helped develop the Android operating system, to the last few years he's worked at Xiaomi in Beijing bringing innovative devices to millions of people.

"Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform. They'll enable us to experience completely new things and be more creative than ever before. Hugo is going to help build that future, and I'm looking forward to having him on our team."

There are several different virtual reality devices out there, including Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. However, VR is still pretty young and hasn't yet gained any real traction with consumers. Barra was a major part of Android at Google and helped turn Xiaomi into a major player in mobile, so Barra could be a good fit in Facebook's effort to make VR more mainstream.
