VR was expected to make a big splash in 2016. It did somehow, but we're far from seeing its full potential unravel. The biggest problem is the lack of an extensive app ecosystem.

To make matters worse, some apps are only available in web browsers, which further limits their availability. But Samsung aims to make things better. The Korean tech giant has rolled out an update for its Samsung Internet for Gear VR which ads support for the relatively new WebVR 1.0.

With the new feature in place, Samsung says Gear VR owners can now expect to stumble across special/hidden images on some websites. Users will be able to view these images in 3D from different angles. However, do bear in mind that this function is delivered via the experimental JavaScript API which might come with a few bugs for the time being.

What's more the update will add a File Explorer in the Internet browser which will allow users to view videos and media content stored on USB drives connected via OTG. Gear VR owners will also be allowed to select a 360-degree image as a background for the browser, offered by graphics company OTOY.

You can download the latest version of the app from the Samsung Gear VR store if you are the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.
