Say Goodbye CyanogenMod and Hi to LineageOS

say-hi-to-sid

Maybe you forgot to check the news feeds for the last few days due to the holidays, but an important announcement has been made over the weekend by Cyanogen Inc.

The company behind the forked Android version, CyanogenOS noted in a blog post the company will discontinue all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds starting December 31.

Not many additional details were given, except that CyanogenMod open source project will continue to live on. However, a few hours later the official announcement appeared on Cyanogen Inc.'s page,  CyanogenMod was officially pronounced dead (via Twitter).

But don't be sad. As ex-Cyanogen Inc. founder Steve Kondik hinted in a recent interview, CyanogenMod's legacy will continue on as LineageOS.

Anyway, at this point, people are busy trying to download copies of flashable ROM builds before CyanogenMod goes off line for good. But you shouldn't fret all that much, as the transition between the two should be achieved smoothly.

One of the team members calls LineageOS a "100% bare fork – LineageOS source == CyanogenMod source", while another revealed the plan is to allow users to update from CyanogenMod without the pain of reformatting. Stay tuned with us for new information on the topic.

As for Cyanogen Inc., the company's future lies with developing a sort of customizable Android alternative for Android OEMs called Modular OS.

What do you think of the new developments?
