Acer Chromebook Tab 10 is the first Chrome OS tablet

Since its debut, Google's Chrome OS has held an interesting position in the market. The software was created for laptops and, after experimenting with different variations, found its niche in the low-cost education market. Schools around the world have adopted Chrome OS as a portable, low-cost, and flexible solution to fulfill the need of integrating technology into education.

Though Chrome OS was designed for laptops, it's become a touch-friendly OS that has grown to share a great deal in common with Android, including running Android apps. While laptops with touchscreens have utilized Chrome OS for years, there had yet to be an attempt at a Chrome OS tablet. Today, that's changing.

Acer's Chromebook Tab 10 is the first Chrome OS tablet, and it's aimed squarely at the education market. The tablet features a respectable spec list including a 9.7-inch 2048×1536 IPS display, OP1 processor with dual-core Cortex A72 and quad-core Cortex A53 processors, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage plus microSD card slot, 5-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, Bluetooth 4.1, USB Type-C 3.1 port, and a 34Wh battery providing up to 9 hours of use. Acer is also including a Wacom EMR stylus that requires no charging, can be embedded in the chassis dock, and provides opportunities for writing, sketching, and working with interactive apps.

Like all education-oriented Chrome OS devices, the Chromebook Tab 10 is easy for IT departments to manage, including features like multiple user sign-in and Google Drive cloud storage for each user, allowing it to be shared in classrooms and labs. Google Expeditions support is coming soon, which will allow educators to take students on virtual trips to famous landmarks in and out of this world. And Google Expeditions AR will take things even further, allowing students to use the tablet's AR capabilities to explore a strand of DNA or witness a volcano explosion, right in the classroom.

Acer is launching the Chromebook Tab 10 in North America in April for a price of $329 USD and in EMEA in May for €329 (including VAT). The Chromebook Tab 10 will be available to education and commercial customers only.
