Unlocked Galaxy S9 doesn’t support FM radio in the U.S., but Samsung’s adding it

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that all of its future smartphones would boast support for FM radio in the U.S. and Canada. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the unlocked variants of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have that feature, even though the carrier versions do. NextRadio, which makes a radio app for both iOS and Android devices, recently confirmed that Samsung did not include the NAM FM API within its unlocked smartphones. The good news is that Samsung is already planning on fixing the issue and adding support for FM radio in the first software update for the unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. NextRadio confirmed Samsung's plans in a statement it provided to Android Police: "Samsung mistakenly did not add the NAB FM API to the unlocked devices. Our team confirmed this with them a couple of days after release upon receiving reports the app did not work. Samsung has said it will be in the first update they do, but have not yet settled on a date. The model numbers are SM-G960UI and SM-G965UI that do not currently work for FM. SM-G960U and SM-G965U are sold through carriers and do work for FM." The inclusion of FM radio support is a pretty important aspect, and not just because it means that smartphone owners can listen to their local RM radio stations on their smartphones. It can also be an important feature in the case of an emergency, especially in a natural disaster situation. It's good that Samsung is adding this feature to its unlocked devices.
