Samsung Galaxy S9+ achieves best smartphone camera in DxOMark ranking

For folks who love photography and cameras, including the cameras in smartphones, DxOMark is seen as a great tool to compare cameras out there in the market, with the in-depth breakdowns doing an excellent job comparing and contrasting what's available.

So when a new smartphone, like a new flagship smartphone from Samsung, gets announced, DxOMark takes it upon themselves to test the device's camera out and find out where it lands in its ever-growing rankings. Based on the latest testing, Samsung should be pretty excited with the results regarding the Galaxy S9+.

According to DxOMark, the new flagship has a fantastic camera. The best smartphone camera on the market, in fact, even if it doesn't even go up for pre-order until Friday, March 2. With its scoring system, DxOMark revealed that the Galaxy S9+'s pair of rear 12-megapixel cameras, one of which is equipped with a variable aperture lens, earned a score of 104 in still photos and a total of 91 in video capture.

In the end, the Galaxy S9+ earned a score of 99, the highest score to date. To compare, the Google Pixel 2 (which held the top ranking spot on DxOMark when that handset launched) earned a score of 98, while the Apple iPhone X has a score of 97. If you're curious, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 earned a score of 94.

If you aren't familiar with the DxOMark testing process, it covers just about everything you could think of, including specific features available on smartphone cameras. The publication tests bright light situations, low light scenarios, bokeh effect, zoom, color adaptation and representation, flash photography, video capture, exposure and contrast, and much more.

It's not a surprise that the Galaxy S9+ earned such a high score, of course. Samsung has been putting considerable effort into the prowess of its smartphone cameras over the last several years. Unfortunately, DxOMark hasn't rated the Galaxy S9 yet.

Are you planning on pre-ordering a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+?
