Facebook is hosting its annual F8 developers conference and revealing new features for its apps. Instagram is getting a whole host of new features over the coming weeks and months. First and foremost is video calling, which is currently in a testing phase and will roll out globally in the coming months. Instagram's official announcement today notes that 100 million users use the Live feature every day, and as such, it sees a reason to launch a video calling feature. Users will be able to call one-on-one or join small groups. You can launch a video call just by tapping the new camera icon on the top of a thread. Video calls can be minimized, too, so you can keep browsing Instagram or chatting with others while in the video call.
Meanwhile, the new Explore page is getting a redesign with a carousel of icons at the top of the screen that will make it easier than ever to find content you want to see. There will be new topics to choose from, including architecture, photography, animals, and more. Once you select one, the Explore page will populate a variety of content to see across the platform. Instagram says the new Explore page will be rolling out over the coming weeks.
Instagram Stories is getting a new way to share directly to the platform. Now when you're in an app like Spotify and select the sharing tool, you will see Instagram Stories as a default option. This will pull the content you want to share directly into the built-in Instagram camera app. Users will be able to edit or share right then and there and can even send it in a Direct Message, too. Users don't have to connect their Instagram account to a third-party app, either, if they want to share to their Stories. Finally, Instagram is adding a Camera Effects Platform. This will allow third-party entities to create new experiences, from text styles, stickers, and face filters. Instagram's announcement says "creative effects from your favorite accounts are coming soon, including Ariana Grande, Baby Ariel, Liza Koshy, Vogue, and Buzzfeed", but doesn't give a specific launch date just yet.
