Samsung confirms that it will disable Galaxy Note 7 in the U.S.

Rumors had cropped up that Samsung would disable the Galaxy Note 7 in the US, just like it had in places like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. And sure enough, Samsung has officially confirmed that will indeed be the case.

Samsung announced today that it will release an update to the Galaxy Note 7 phones in the United States which will permanently disable the handset. As Samsung puts it, the update will "eliminate their ability to work as mobile devices."

The update will be released on December 19 and will be distributed to all devices within 30 days.

Samsung and the carriers in the United States will inform those who still have a Galaxy Note 7 of the global recall, and that their device will be soon shut down. The notice will urge them to return their device and get something else.

The company did add that over 93 percent of all recalled Galaxy Note 7 units in the U.S. have been returned so far, so that's good news.

You don't still have a Galaxy Note 7, right?
